Does Medicare cover Wegovy?

Historically Medicare did not cover medications prescribed solely for weight loss, but coverage has been expanding: as of 2025, Medicare Part D plans may cover Wegovy for patients with cardiovascular disease who are overweight or obese, because it carries an FDA-approved indication to reduce cardiovascular risk. Coverage for weight loss alone remains limited and varies by plan. Check your specific Part D plan's formulary.

How coverage works today

Wegovy (brand-name semaglutide) gained an FDA-approved indication to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease who are overweight or obese. That indication opened the door for some Medicare Part D plans to cover it for eligible patients — but plans differ, and coverage strictly for weight loss is still restricted under longstanding Medicare rules.

What to do

Confirm your eligibility by checking your Part D plan's formulary or calling your plan. If brand-name coverage isn't available to you, GOAL.MD offers a Medicare GLP-1 Bridge and physician-supervised programs so cost or coverage gaps don't have to stop your care. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are a separate, self-pay option prepared by licensed U.S. pharmacies.
