GHK-Cu (copper tripeptide-1) is one of the most-studied peptides in dermatology. It's a tiny three-amino-acid peptide bound to copper, and your body produces it naturally — but levels drop sharply with age.
This is a clinical look at what GHK-Cu actually does, what the research supports, and what's still hype.
The mechanisms — simply
GHK-Cu does three things at the cellular level:
- Stimulates collagen and elastin production in fibroblasts (the cells that build skin structure).
- Activates wound-healing pathways — it was first identified in human plasma as a wound-repair signal.
- Modulates copper-dependent enzymes that drive antioxidant defense and DNA repair.
Skin benefits — what's actually proven
Across more than 200 published studies, GHK-Cu has been shown to:
- Reduce fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating new collagen formation.
- Improve skin firmness and elasticity via increased elastin.
- Repair the skin barrier in damaged or photoaged skin.
- Reduce hyperpigmentation from sun damage and post-inflammatory marks.
- Accelerate healing of wounds, post-procedure skin, and acne lesions.
In one peer-reviewed study, twice-daily GHK-Cu cream improved photodamaged skin appearance more than vitamin C cream and matched retinoic acid for several markers — without retinoid irritation.
Hair and scalp benefits
GHK-Cu signals follicle stem cells to enter the growth phase. Topical use on the scalp has been shown to:
- Increase hair follicle size and density.
- Reduce 5-alpha reductase activity (the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, the main driver of pattern hair loss).
- Improve scalp inflammation that contributes to follicle miniaturization.
It's used both as standalone scalp therapy and as an adjunct to minoxidil or finasteride.
What GHK-Cu doesn't do
- It's not a substitute for sunscreen.
- It won't reverse deep wrinkles or significant volume loss — those need fillers or stronger interventions.
- It won't regrow hair on completely scarred or fully bald scalp areas.
- It's not a quick fix — meaningful results take 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
How to use it
- Skin: apply a pea-sized amount to clean, damp skin morning and night. Layer under moisturizer. Compatible with most actives — but avoid using simultaneously with high-strength vitamin C, which can destabilize the copper bond.
- Scalp: apply directly to thinning areas once or twice daily. Massage in for 30 seconds.
Is GHK-Cu safe?
GHK-Cu has an excellent safety profile. It's a peptide your body already produces. Mild scalp tingling or transient skin warmth in the first few applications is normal. Stop and contact your physician if you develop a rash.
